A Bar Bon Funk collaboration with Modern Day Culture, a vinyl-only cocktail bar from Bangkok.

I had the opportunity to design the event poster and Instagram post for their event at Bar Bon Funk, located at New Bahru, which took place on 6 April 2025.

Brief

Bar Bon Funk is a cosy cocktail bar in the River Valley neighbourhood, snugly tucked in the iconic New Bahru building. Modern Day Culture, a vinyl-only cocktail bar hailing all the way from Bangkok, was invited to BBF’s first ever guest shift. MDC is popular for their 'bartender's choice' service, where people can choose two flavour keywords and the bartender will surprise them according to their preferences.

The Initial Concepts

Concept 1

This version draws inspiration from “Back to the Future”, blending nostalgic elements with a modern twist. The floating vinyl records symbolise old-school music culture, while the sleek cocktail glass and dynamic lighting add a contemporary edge. The leading lights and futuristic motion give the impression of time travel, mirroring the fusion of past and present in mixing both music & drinks.

Concept 2

This is a hazy, intimate affair of cocktails and music, where soft glows meet the rhythm of vinyl. Inspired by the intimate atmosphere of Bar Bon Funk, this design captures the feeling of a hazy, visceral experience. The soft, glowing edges of the glass and hand are gently illuminated by the spotlight, evoking a dreamlike quality. Surrounding text features subtle motion blurs, mimicking the spin of a vinyl record.

Next Round

Concept 1

This piece uses bold, solid blocks of colour and crisp edges to depict a guest immersed in dance, surrounded by the energy of music and drinks.

Inspired by Matisse’s early approach of using paper cut-outs as sketches, the artwork strips the scene down to its essence: movement, rhythm and celebration. Just as Matisse sought purity in form, this composition reflects the fundamental human desire for enjoyment and pleasure.

Concept 2

Blending Bar Bon Funk’s signature illustrative style with expressive shapes, this piece captures the rhythmic pulse of music and drinks in motion. Drawing from Matisse’s Fauvist influence, the composition strips away realism in favour of expressive brushstrokes.

The swirling forms and overlapping elements evoke the sensation of prancing through a bar, immersed in the vibrant atmosphere where cocktails flow and music moves the night.
